Fundamentals of On-Farm Plant Breeding
Join the Northern Organic Vegetable Improvement Collaborative (NOVIC) at Salish Kootenai College in Pablo, Montana, for a two-day classroom and field-based course on plant breeding. Nationally renowned organic plant breeders from the University of Wisconsin, Cornell University, Oregon State University, and Organic Seed Alliance will lead this course.
This course teaches participants how to improve vegetable quality through careful seed selection and improvement. Participants also learn how to select for reproductive fitness, yield, disease resistance, and improved performance under adverse conditions. Participants gain knowledge in seed growing basics, sourcing germplasm, conducting variety trials, and basic variety improvement techniques. Prior experience in basic seed growing is recommended. We suggest reviewing Organic Seed Alliance's online tutorials on seed saving and production before the course.
