1.8: Storyboard Templates

An easy way to create a storyboard is to use a two-column template. Each scene is described in a box with the VISUAL components of the scene on the left column and the AUDIO components on the right column.

I'm Josh Volk. I run a small hand scale CSA here at Slow Hand Farm on Sauvie Island just outside Portland, Oregon. Today I want to share with you how I prepare my greenhouse seedbeds. We prepare beds by hand in the greenhouse. I'm a big fan of tools. I love tools that are well made and work well. I've found that doing things by hand means I really need my tools to work well, or I end up working much harder. In preparing a bed for planting I'll usually use several separate tools in succession, each for a slightly different part of the process. The tools we use are a Clarington Forge spading fork (photo 1), a DeWitt seed rake (photo 2), and a SHW debris rake (photo 3). For seeding we're using a Johnny's 6-row seeder. (photo 4)

The spading fork is the first tool I use when preparing a seed bed. The purpose of the fork is to loosen and aerate the soil. A spading fork has a "D" or "T" shaped handle and several (usually four) short, sturdy tines (photo 1). It is used for loosening, lifting and turning soil. It is used similarly to a spade, but in many circumstances it is more appropriate than a spade: the tines can be pushed more easily into the ground, it can rake out stones and weeds and break up clods. My spading fork is made by Clarington Forge. I've had the fork for over 15 years and after a lot of abuse it's on its third handle. The D handle allows me to balance my weight directly over the fork tines and open up the soil 12" deep.
